What is the Meaning of “TSKR”?

TOC

Definition

“TSKR” originates from the Japanese word 助かる (tasukaru), which means “saved” or “that helps a lot.” This abbreviation was first popularized by overseas internet users, derived from the romaji spelling “TaSuKaRu”, taking its initial letters to form “TSKR.” It is commonly used to express gratitude for heartwarming or soothing experiences. As the term gained popularity, Japanese users also began adopting it.

This term is especially common in the VTuber scene. When a VTuber does something that makes fans’ hearts flutter—such as ASMR, singing, or acting cute—the chat is often flooded with “TSKR” comments, expressing the fans’ happiness in that moment.

Sneezing Can Be “TSKR” Too!?

Interestingly, in 2020, a Japanese netizen おあ conducted data analysis and published the Hololive Buzzword Awards, ranking the most commonly used phrases in Super Chats. Expectedly, familiar terms like “Ahoy!”, “てぇてぇ” , and “ないすぅ” made the list. However, one particularly unusual phrase stood out—“くしゃみ助かる” (“sneezing helps a lot”).

Perhaps it’s the unexpected cuteness of a sneeze that makes it so beloved among some VTuber fans. Some are even willing to send Super Chats just to express their gratitude for a sneeze! おあ further analyzed the data and found that Hololive VTuber Minato Aqua ranked the highest in Super Chat earnings per sneeze—each sneeze reportedly worth over 10,000 yen!
