This term comes from Japanese idol culture, where “graduation” means a member is leaving the group and moving on to a new stage in life.

VTubers adopted the same concept. Graduation means the VTuber will no longer livestream, perform, or interact on social media as that character. It’s a permanent goodbye, not just a short break or pause. Whether the channel and videos remain after graduation depends on the agency or the individual.

After Minato Aqua’s record-breaking graduation stream, popular streamer Ludwig (6M subs) posted on X (Twitter), asking: “Where do VTubers go when they graduate?”

The tweet sparked wide discussion, with many active VTubers joining in to share their thoughts. It also made people reflect more deeply on the connection between the virtual character and the person behind it.
