What is an itabag?

Definition
An itabag is a subcultural fashion trend that emerged in Japan in the 2010s. It’s usually a backpack with a clear plastic window, packed neatly and densely with badges, plushies, acrylic charms, and other character merch.
This over-the-top display is where the “pain” in itabag comes from— in Japanese, itai (痛い) means “painful,” but it can also mean “embarrassing” or “cringe.” So literally, itabag is a “painfully flashy bag.”
For fans, however, an itabag is more like a portable “shrine” to their favorite character. It both protects treasured merch and boldly shows off their love without holding back.
Whether at anime conventions, underground idol lives, or even K-pop fan events, itabags have grown beyond personal hobby into a kind of social language. Fans can spot each other instantly, bond over shared passions, and make itabags a must-have item for any event.
The culture is alive in the VTuber community too—at offline events, fans often show up with their itabags, and some VTubers have even released official itabags as anniversary merch, to the delight of their fans!
