Definition

“gachikoi” is a term that combines the Japanese words gachi (serious, genuine) and koi (romantic love). Literally, it means “serious romantic love.” It refers to a situation where a fan develops real romantic feelings toward an idol, going beyond simple admiration or support into a deeper emotional attachment that may include strong possessiveness and a desire for an exclusive relationship.

In the VTuber industry, the emergence of gachikoi is closely tied to the highly interactive nature of livestreaming. VTubers communicate directly with viewers, remember regulars’ names, and give personalized responses to donations or comments. This sense of “being seen and remembered” can gradually pull fans in without them realizing it. At the same time, because VTubers perform through virtual avatars, they often embody an idealized, almost “perfect” persona, which can intensify emotional projection compared to traditional idols.

It is also worth noting that this dynamic can sometimes be intentionally encouraged. Some creators interact with fans in ways that resemble a romantic partner, deliberately cultivating gachikoi fans in exchange for consistent and significant financial support.

Although gachikoi is similar to the concept of yumejoshi or yumedanshi, referring to fans who imagine themselves in relationships with fictional characters, there is a key difference. The latter involves projecting oneself into a fictional world, while gachikoi involves pulling the character out of the screen and treating them as a real romantic partner in the real world.
