What does “ASMR” mean?

Definition
ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) refers to a sensory experience triggered by specific auditory stimuli, and is commonly described as a “brain tingling” sensation. Typical triggers include whispering, soft-spoken voices, subtle rustling sounds, and rhythmic tapping. Listeners may feel a gentle tingling that starts from the scalp, travels down the neck, and sometimes reaches the back, often accompanied by feelings of relaxation, comfort, or drowsiness.
ASMR is not an officially recognized medical term; rather, it emerged from online communities around 2010 as a collectively coined label. While studies by institutions such as Swansea University in the UK have found that around 80% of participants use ASMR to help with sleep and about 70% to relieve stress, scientific evidence remains limited. Even so, ASMR has gained a large and dedicated user base as a relaxation aid.
Within the virtual entertainment industry, ASMR has become a highly developed content genre—often regarded as the “fourth pillar” of VTuber content alongside gaming, chatting, and singing streams. For VTubers, ASMR demands precise vocal control, a strong sense of rhythm, and deep character immersion. For audiences, it functions as a comforting ritual that soothes emotions. As a result, VTuber ASMR goes beyond simply “listening to sounds”; it is a content culture that blends role-play, technical execution, and emotional connection, and serves as a key tool for cultivating core fans and long-term engagement.
